On September 8, 2026, the Kazakhstan–India 2026 Business Forum on Trade and Investment took place in Chennai, India. SKYHANSA representatives presented the Khorgos International Cargo and Passenger Airport project and outlined opportunities for international partners to participate in its development.
The forum brought together representatives of government agencies, businesses and development institutions from both countries. The programme included plenary and sector-specific sessions, investment project presentations and business meetings.
During the presentation, SKYHANSA representatives outlined the concept for the future airport, its key infrastructure specifications and potential areas for cooperation. The airport is planned to be built at the intersection of road and rail routes. Once operational, it will connect air and ground freight transport and handle international cargo flows, including those between Kazakhstan and India.
Investment in the project is estimated at over US$500 million. Plans include the construction of a unique runway designed to accommodate large cargo aircraft, a multipurpose cargo terminal, an aircraft refuelling complex, and an aircraft maintenance and repair centre. The project also envisages the development of ground handling infrastructure and commercial facilities on land adjacent to the airport. The cargo terminal will be equipped to store and handle various types of cargo, including pharmaceutical products, under temperature-controlled conditions. The first phase of the airport is planned to become operational in 2028.
The forum also highlighted several areas for investment: airfield infrastructure, the cargo terminal, the aircraft refuelling complex, ground handling services, the maintenance and repair centre, and commercial infrastructure on land adjacent to the airport.
SKYHANSA representatives invited international companies to cooperate in launching cargo flights and arranging technical stops for refuelling, jointly developing logistics and distribution centres, and undertaking real estate development projects on land adjacent to the airport. These areas will form the basis for further engagement with air carriers, logistics operators and investors.
Khorgos International Cargo and Passenger Airport will increase cargo volumes between Kazakhstan and India and facilitate the delivery of goods for businesses in both countries.
